UME was founded in 2007, out of the need to find healthy replacements for the products in my home.

At age 30, I began experiencing cystic acne. The condition deteriorated over time. Having never dealt with acne before, I was reluctant to immediately try the chemical treatments the doctors recommended. I asked myself “What is the source of my skin flare up?” I believed that if I could find the source, I would be able to treat my condition naturally.

A friend had told me about parabens, a hormone-disrupting preservative, found in many shampoos, deodorants, cosmetics and soaps. Could parabens be the cause or at least a contributing factor? My research on parabens made me aware that many of the products I used throughout my home contained an assortment of harmful hormone disruptors, neurotoxins and carcinogens. In fact, I was surprised to discover that almost every product in my house contained one or more ingredients that are classified as harmful to my health and the environment.  

In order to "cure" my case of acne naturally, I saw the need to give up many of the things I loved and had grown accustom to using. Equipped with a list of “ingredients to avoid” I set out to find healthy alternatives at my local health food store.  I was stunned to discover that even many of the natural and organic products contained ingredients that I was trying to avoid, so I set out to find and create pure natural products that could be used by my family and in my home.  

During my voyage of discovery, I recognized the need to help others understand how important it is to use natural products in their homes.  I also saw a need to provide the source where one could obtain truly natural alternative products. The result is UME.
